almoço de aniversário no OX

Agora que cheguei de férias e revelei as fotografias analógicas já posso mostrar como foi a experiência no OX, aquando do meu aniverário resolvi ir ao restaurante mais badalado do momento e nem sei como consegui reservar uma mesa na mesma semana.

O espaço é giro, muito giro, simples, com apenas três tonalidades (branco, azul e castanho!), uma grande janela virada para a rua que deixa entrar muita luz natural e o conceito de apenas utilizar ingredientes da época agradava-me muito mesmo antes de sequer ter experimentado.

Como português que sou, para começar pedi um vinho português rosé, um vinho verde, claro está! Depois a entrada foi uma sopa de cebola branca com folha de louro, o prato principal um folhado de cordeiro com ervilhas e legumes de verão e para sobremesa um mousse de chocolate branco com manga e avelãs. A sobremesa foi a parte em que tive de explicar que não tomo café com a sobremesa como os de cá, mas sim depois da sobremesa! Lá pedi o expresso e veio um macarroon a acompanhar!

Foi muito muito bom. Esteve tudo perfeito e por mim voltava já hoje.

Now that I am back from holidays and the film pictures were processed I can show you my experience at OX on my b-day.

The place is cute, very cute, simple, with only three colours (white, blue and brown), a big window open to the street that lets all the day light come inside the place and the concept of only using seasonal ingredients that pleased me even before trying.

As portuguese, I started with a portguese rosé wine, a green wine, of course! For an appetizer a white onion and bay leaf soup, for a main course a rump of lamb, pea and confit summer vegetables and for dessert a white chocolate mousse with mango and hazelnuts. The dessert was the part that I had to explain that I do not take coffee with dessert as people from here, but after dessert! Then I asked for an espresso and a macarron comes along!

Was really really good. Everything was perfect and I can´t wait to go back.

The Great Curry Cook Off

Ontem de manhã, mais uma vez, fui ao mercado mas desta vez com atenções viradas para uma competição entre duas “chefes” de cozinha (por estes lados, qualquer um que cozinhe é chefe) para ver quem faria o melhor “curry” – caril.

Foi curioso assistir ao processo de preparação, a degustação e à votação final – que me deixou bastante surpreso.

Quanto à preparação, fiquei completamente perdido entre pimentos de mil e uma variedades, gengibre, alho e um sem número de especiarias, por isso contínuo sem saber como cozinhar o curry! Já a degustação, foi a parte mais interessante, porque os produtos finais eram praticamente opostos – na minha opinião, que não sou nenhum entendido em curry. A meu ver, o da Hotlips Curries by Jenny estava melhor, pois conseguia distinguir-se os ingredientes e saboreá-los. Contudo a audiência presente no evento deu uma clara vitória para o curry do Indian Nights Inn (qualquer coisa como 90% contra 10%) e foi isto que me surpreendeu porque este segundo prato era bastante picante (demasiado até) e não consegui identificar ingrediente nenhum.

O resultado surpreendeu-me, sim! Pensava eu que as pessoas gostavam de saborear a comida, identificar ingredientes, descobrir novos gostos, porém engano meu, como mostrou a votação final. Mas não devia surpreender-me, não! Porque afinal de contas já me deveria ter habituado ao facto de que aqui – no Reino Unido - as pessoas gostam de tudo extra picante. Então dei por mim a pensar que o problema com comida picante seria meu. No entanto, também gosto de comida picante, ora veja-se o frango de churrasco com piri-piri. A diferença é que gosto de frango com piri-piri e não do contrário, piri-piri com frango.

Conclusão, a audiência gosta de molhos picantes com comida à mistura, já eu nem por isso. Porém, despertou-me a atenção para o curry e pode ser que um dia destes tente preparar em casa!

Yesterday morning I went to the St George's Market again, to see a contest between two chefs to see who cooks the best curry. The event was part of Belfast Restaurant Week.

It was curious to watch the method, a tasting and the final votes – something that surprised me.

At the method, I got lost with so many types of peppers, ginger, garlic and spices, so I still do not know how to cook it. Tasting was the most interesting part because the final products were opposites – in my opinion and I am not a curry specialist. In my opinion, Hotlips Curries by Jenny was the best one because I could taste the different ingredients. On the other hand, the event audience gave the victory to the curry from Indian Nights Inn (something like 90% against 10%) and I was really surprised because the second curry was so spicy (too much) that I could not identify any ingredient.

I got surprised by the result, yes! I thought that people would like to taste real food, identify ingredients, try new things, nevertheless I was wrong. I should not be surprised, no! After all, I should be accustomed that people in here – United Kingdom – always want everything too spicy. So, at this time I was thinking that the problem was mine with spicy food. However, I like spicy food too, like piri-piri chicken. The difference, I like chicken with piri-piri sauce and not the other way around, piri-piri with chicken.

Conclusion, the audience at the event likes spicy sauce with food. As for me, the event brought the curry to my attention and I might try to cook it one of this days.
